Based in Washington, D.C., and founded in 2003, Asian & Pacific Islander American (APIA) Scholars is the nation’s largest non-profit organization devoted to creating opportunities that supply access to higher education and resources that enhance the academic, personal, and professional success of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans (APIAs) students. These efforts aspire to advance the conversation around access to education, elevate the voice of the APIA community, and entrust APIA leaders to drive systemic change. APIA Scholars has assisted more than 7,000 APIA scholars to access higher education through over $100 million in scholarships awarded.

The APIA Scholarship is a national scholarship open to all incoming and returning Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) undergraduate college scholars at any accredited U.S. college or university. The APIA awards start from one-time $2,500 scholarships to multi-year $20,000 prizes. Students of the scholarship will also have access to various programming from APIA Scholars, including mentorships, conferences, mental health resources, networks, and additional financial resources.

APIA Scholars gives scholarships to underserved APIA Students, with a particular focus on those who live at or below the poverty line, are the first in their families to attend college, are the spokesperson of the APIA community’s diversity (geographically and ethnically}, especially those ethnicities that have been low rated on college campuses due to restricted access and opportunity; and have placed a strong passion on community service and leadership as well as solid academic excellence.

Eligibility Criteria for APIA Scholarship 2024

• Students must be of Asian and Pacific Islander ethnicity as defined by the U.S
• Applicant must be a citizen, national, or legal permanent
• Applicant must enrol as an undergraduate student in a U.S.-accredited college or university in Fall 2024.
• Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale (unweighted) or have earned a GED.
• Applicant must apply for federal financial aid for the 2024 academic year using the Free Application for the Federal Student Aid (FASFA) by early April 2024.
• Applicants must submit one letter of recommendation online.

Application Requirements for APIA Scholarship 2024

1. The application has 7 sections: personal information, family education, high school and college information, financial information, extracurricular activities, work experience, family responsibilities, and essays.
2. Have a recommender submit a letter of recommendation through the Kaleidoscope platform by January 27, 2024
3. Finalist students of the scholarship (who will be notified in mid-Spring 2024) will be asked to submit an unofficial transcript, their 2024 FAFSA Student Aid Report, and, for incoming college applicants, a college admissions letter as well as complete the next stage of the online application.

ESSAY QUESTIONS for APIA Scholarship 2024

Students will be asked to choose three of the following essay prompts to respond to. Each prompt has a 500-word limit.

Option 1: Applicant must describe a specific situation or activity in which you took on a leadership role, whether by choice or because you naturally moved into it. In what ways do students feel you were effective? In what ways do you think you could have been a better leader in society? Describe how your cultural identity may have influenced your leadership style of Applicant.

Option 2: Student must describe a time you created or built something and describe what it was. Was it something new, or did it enhance or transform something already existing? What was the process for developing what you started? Did you share what you formed with others? What meaning or value did it have for you and those you may have shared it with the other person?

Option 3: Please describe what you would like to conduct in college. These actions could be personal, educational, or professional. Please give us some definite steps you plan to take to achieve these goals. How will achieving these goals impact your future self and professional life after college?

Option 4: Candidate must discuss an issue of personal, local, national, or global concern and its importance to you. What does the student know about this issue? What backgrounds led you to be concerned about this issue? How has your APIA identity impacted your perspective on this issue? Who is working on this issue you address, and what makes their work interesting?

Can the Applicant apply if I am not receiving federal or other financial aid?

Yes. While we require scholarship students to submit their 2024-2025 FAFSA Student Aid Report, they are not required to have received financial aid from other sources to apply for the scholarship.

Can I apply if my or my family’s income is below the poverty line?

Yes, if all eligibility criteria are met. APIA Scholars consider many factors when reviewing scholarship applications; a student’s socioeconomic status is only one part.

 I’m graduating from my undergraduate program in December 2024 – can I apply?

Yes, you can still apply. If you were selected as a scholar, we would tell the school that your funds must be used during the fall semester. You would also be limited to scholarships that are only a one-year award.
