In order to feed on EFNs, foraging parasitoids need to find suitable plants, thus the ideal plants for conservation biological control, in addition to improving natural enemy survival and fecundity, should possess highly attractive volatiles to ensure that EFNs are frequently visited.

The finding that nectar-inhabiting microbes can be the “hidden players” increasing parasitoid performances/attraction to flowering plants has called attention to the complexity of the interactions amongplants and parasitoids. Yet nothing is known about which microbes are associated with EFNs, and how such microbes affect parasitoid preference and performance. In this PhD project the role of key bacteria/yeasts present in EFNS of Vicia faba plants will be investigated in a CBC perspective.
Specifically, a combination of olfactometer assays and chemical analyses (GC-MS) will be employed to unravel which microbes have a positive effect of the attraction of egg parasitoid wasps. A combination of feeding assays with chemical analyses of microbe-fermented nectars will be used to test for microbes enhancing the fitness of egg parasitoid wasps.
